Gandhiji Writes a Postcard contest

What do you do, when you’re the Department of Posts in India? Your profits are slipping, trust in your service is zero and the only people who use your services are the students who are forced to use the Speed Post to submit their application forms for various examinations. The competition postcards that you introduced have now been rendered obsolete by email and SMS. So, really, what do you do to draw some attention towards your ailing enterprise? You organize a contest in the name of Gandhi and promote the use of your service among those people in the society who can be most easily influenced – kids!

India Post (I still don’t get it. If it’s भारतीए डाक in Hindi then why isn’t the English name ‘Indian Post’?) is organizing “Gandhiji Writes a Postcard” contest for the students of classes 3rd to 7th. It’s an innovative idea and it’s surprising that it’s coming from a government department. All the kids need to do is emulate Gandhi (he carried postcards with him) and write about any problem of today and mail it to the Postmaster. Kids stand to win anything from iPods to Laptops. Quite a brilliant idea. Not only is this actually useful as kids get to know the basics of writing and mailing letters, it targets that very segment which is fast losing interest in the postal service. Now, only if they promote the contest in schools around the country, they could get a really great response to this.

Additional details are available on the website of India Post and here.

Now, what about those of us who are, you know, not in 7th standard anymore?! Fear not! We, at The Melting Pot are organizing our very own Gandhiji Writes a Postcard contest. You don’t have to think or emulate Gandhi in our contest because I know a lot of Gandhi haters visit this blog. All you need to do is, reply to this post with a message that talks about some problem which YOU think needs to be addressed. We don’t have any prizes to give away but we’ll post the best entries that we receive with a link to your blog or Twitter.

So, what are you waiting for? Your kids spend 10 bucks to participate while you (yes you, cheapskate) can do it for free!

I think poverty is the biggest challenge and every poor fella in this country says only one thing…..
Tumhare jaise humne dekhne wale nahi dekhe
Jigar mein kis tarah se ranjo gham pale? nahi dekhe
Yahan par saat majhab ka hawaala sab ne dekha hai
Kisi ne bhi hamare paun ke chhale nahi dekhe….

Kiran chahu to duniya ke andhere gher lete hain,
Meri tarah koi jeeye to jeena bhool jayega…..
Kadam uthne nahi paate ke rasta kaat deta hai,
Mere malik, tu kab tak aakhir mujhe aajmayega……

Agar toote kissi ka dil, to shab bhar aankh roti hai,
Yeh duniya hai gunno ki jisme kaatein piroti hai.
Hum apne gaon mein milte hain dushman se bhi ithlakar,
Tumhara shehar dekha to badi taklif hoti hai.

Humein iss chist se umeed kya thi aur kya nikla,
kahan jana hua tha teh aur kahan se raasta nikla.
khuda jinko samjte the, woh sheesha the na pathar the,
Jisse pathar samjhte the, wohi apna khuda nikla….

After reading Chetan Bhagat and Khushwant Singh, my opinion of Indian authors was something in the range of ‘pathetic imitators’. They suck. They are so bad at it that they shower misery upon book-lovers! Every page is a torture full of illogical bullshit which makes you wince as you turn another page. Khushwant Singh thinks [...]
