Doomed love
This is the real life story of a man who dared to believe until he realized he had ‘friends’ -
You see a girl in college and there’s instant infatuation. You can’t explain why you like her but you do. The next thing you do is you try to know more about her through your friends. A week or two goes by and you start frequenting her Facebook profile just to get a glimpse. Then one day you hit the jackpot, your friend is good friends with her best friend. And what’s more he tells you that she’s single too. Even though everybody else says the opposite but you still believe your friend. Not because he’s your friend but because you want to believe him. Then, one day you get a call from your friend. He’s arranged a rendezvous. You’re taken by surprise. You’re restless, a part of you wonders if you’re really ready and another can’t wait, optimism and pessimism battle it out. But eventually it’s the fairy love tales that movies have fed you that win. You put on your best pair of clothes, put on the fragrance and the hair gel. Even the high fever you’ve been suffering from ceases to matter as you speed through the streets on your bike. Your mind is playing out your very own love story replete with smiling faces. You reach the meeting point with your friend and place the order. Your heart skips a beat with every indication of her arrival – someone walking up the stairs, a beep on your friend’s phone or a chatter between two friends. And then you hear your buddy saying “Yeah,we’re at the top floor. Come up ” You hear someone making their way up the steps. It hurts so bad. Nobody hears your stifled sigh amidst the loud laughter. You can make a good joke only at someone’s expense. You get out of the place with some lame excuse. You run outside to get some air. You’re not angry. You’re not hurt. You’re just numb.
You get home and bury your head under the pillow. There’s a moment when you just wish it was a nightmare and you open your eyes to the wetness,it is real. You get a call for a night out. You don’t refuse because you never agreed, you’re too bloody hurt. So, you make your way back amidst the laughter. You try to drown the sadness under glasses of whisky. You can’t bear the laughter anymore. And for the first time you feel like hitting out but you can’t because ‘ it’s just a girl ‘. You try to bid your farewell but it’s hard to persuade a dozen drunk men and even harder when you pretend everything’s hunky-dory. So,you’re pulled inside the car and once agin you’re zooming down the road with deafening music. A couple of bottles after, you’re back on the road. Suddenly, someone expresses a desire to dance in the middle of the road. Of course, he’s obliged. As soon as you break into a sweat, the cops arrive and put you in the back of their jeep. You’re too damn drunk to care. And before you grasp the situation, you’re inside the lock-up. You don’t protest or plead, you just drink some water and lie down on the bed. After a while, your friends pay up the cops and you’re out.You wake the next morning with a hangover and amidst the same laughter…
