Google’s googly

I just finished watching a brilliant documentary based on “How Google Works”. To be frank, I don’t know why they named it “How Google Works” because it was more of a criticism that they had posed than its working. But you know what, it was actually true. I don’t know but I am in deep pool of questions now and I have already started sensing—-that yes may be there is something going on wrong.

First of all, let me tell you some of the facts which were presented by the documentary:

1) Google saves every query that we passed in the search engine for nine months. In other words we can say that it keeps an eye on us for nine consecutive months (as most of the times we do everything using google). They say that they keep this sensitive information to make search better.

2) Google tells everybody that it is not an evil company through its “Don’t be evil” slogan. But in 2007, US-Govt has demanded some of the personal information about a particular firm which the government was skeptic about. Despite being not an evil organisation, Google had to give away the information. So there is never a surety.

3) Google is heading towards “cloud computing” i.e. eliminating the need of the hard-disk from your PC. Yes, you won’t even need to install any software in the future. Everything will be provided online. But the question that documentary posed is that “Is it safe for mankind to thrive under such a monopoly”. i.e. only Google will decide if we can work or not. That is menacing.

4) Gmail: – What an evil it is. Google ads on g-mail are generated based on what we have in our mail. Relevant ads—cool. But the point is that Google is scanning each and every mail that I have in my inbox :-( . Now what guarantee do I have that they will not misuse this information or someone would not force them to misuse this information.

Are we really getting overdependent on the gigantic organization.

Now we all know that with popularity, comes the criticism. But how many times do we bother to listen to what critics are saying? May be they have some genuine points which we might be missing. Critics are always under-estimated and are often declared as party poopers. We should give at least one single thought before questioning their point of view.

To me the criticism makes sense to me that we should not blindly move behind one company and ignore rest of the world. With diversity comes the real glimpse of the topic.

Disclaimer: – I myself trust Google just as the way you people do. The whole article is based on what I have just seen in the documentary and it has put me some kind of dilemma. I would definitely dig in to find some more details over the same. Meanwhile, I would like you all to genuinely think about it and present your views. Do you see it as mere censure or even you feel ominous?

To be aware becomes more and more important
To label it evil wouldn’t change much for me but reading articles at Google-watch.org makes you aware of Google’s methods. It shows how Google collects user profiles and turns it into targeted advertising. The offers that show up on websites are not random at all but can eventually be extremely tailored to personal interests so that it gets more likely you spend your money on things you don’t really need except they are appealing to you.

The concern for privacy is huge and is genuine. But if you are apprehensive, do not use the product. They are other viable options. Switch to them and help increase the competition. Google will not stop expanding because we fear for our privacy. That is because Google does not force us to use their services and neither does it charge for the majority of them. The ads are there to monetize and keep these services alive. The logs and saved searches are there for stats, analysis, refinement as well as legal reasons. We use Google’s services because we like them.

The fact is that there can not be privacy on the Internet due to the way it is designed.

It is rightly said — ‘Consumer is the king’… so, no worries…Google can’t monopolise until ‘we’ the ‘king’ don’t let it be. As far as privacy is concerned, the pragmatism on a user’s side itself demands that if we are using the services provided by a third party to handle our private info, we must never be 100% sure… Anyways points in documentary are worth mooting, …especially if one can come up with an idea of providing all these services(of Google) in a more efficient way, removing at least some of the ‘menaces’(as indicated in documentary) involved. any such effort ‘ ll be worth appreciating…

Winston Churchill once said of India – ‘ India is a geographical term. It is no more a united nation like the equator ’. Churchill was also of the belief that while Pakistan would flourish, India was doomed to disintegrate and fail. Churchill, with all his hatred for India was probably talking logically. India is [...]

62 years is a long time to get one’s act together. Enough even for a country. It’s been 62 years since India gained it’s independence. If America is a great country, then you’re talking about the cultural dominance, economic muscle, military [...]
