Talisman

Everybody who’s read the NCERT books will be able to recall a decorated page in the front named – Gandhi’s Talisman. Well, it went something like ‘when you’re in some kind of doubt about doing something or not, ask yourself how it’ll be able to help people around you..’. Since, this isn’t exactly the age of the missionaries I’m not going to spend any more on time on that.

The new age Talisman is this – ‘Do only those things that will be beneficial to you. Help out only those people who can benefit you presently. Once you’ve done that, try to screw everybody else. Don’t shy away from screwing the people who were once your ‘friends’. If you’re old school, then leave the last bit out but never help out anybody at the cost of your own inconvenience.’

I regularly try to adopt the new age Talisman but somehow I often slip up. May be I’m just a slow learner. Anyways, talking of talismans I have one for myself – ‘When in doubt, remind yourself that life is short. Every passing moment is one step closer to death. So, don’t hold anything back and explore everything. Don’t let the world dictate how you lead your life, be your own dictator. Be the leading man in your life at least. Always ask yourself whether you’re spending each passing moment in the best possible way. Just do everything you wish to do, this’ your chance’.

I’d like to add a few more details to your new age Talisman : “Do only things that benefit you. Those who may be of any help or use, make them believe that they need you. Use them, exploit them, discard them. Once you’ve done that, find your next target. If the person you screwed with comes back, do not hesitate to turn them around and sodomize them. If they complain, ignore and move on.”

By the way, Gandhi’s Talisman used to be there in Hindi as well. It ended with something like “… and you will find your self melting away…”

    Firstly, who is the author?

I love the idea :) Its very creative and an apt topic of discussion.

For the ‘actual’ talisman, I always had mixed feelings for it. That would it really apply, ever, to situations I’d be in. C’mon now how the hell would the poorest man be affected by my life. But then I thought, it was prime to Gandhi ji’s idea of survival. And then I thought about my prime idea or most defining attribute. And substituted his concept of ‘our actions affecting the poorest, most miserable man’ with my idea. And things made perfect sense.

And if your main idea is about making ends meet anyhow or living life to the fullest, be it then.

There is a story where a father had two sons. He was a drunkard. He used to beat his wife and the two little boys. When the kids grew up, one of them became a drunkard, beat his wife and kids. And the other one had a loving wife. He was a kind and caring man.

They had the same father. The difference between them is that while one of them thought – I am this way because my father was the same and this is the life I have always seen; the other son thought – I would never hurt my wife and kids. I’d never be a monster like my father.

We try… We ignore.. We hurt.. but somewhere in the midst of it, I wonder how it would be if we were all nice.. And I always hesitate at the thought of using someone, and trampling over their feelings.

It is how you perceive things.

Last night, India got kicked out of the T-20 World Cup by England. And as I suspected the journos who’ve probably never picked up a bat are aiming for the cricketers’ throats. It’s so amusing to watch their opinions swing like a pendulum – one moment Team India was the best, the next moment Team [...]

Recently, in an interview English cricketer Flintoff had spoken bluntly on the issue of ‘multiculturalism’ in Britain. Flintoff felt that immigrants should try to assimilate in the English society instead of insulating themselves and staying within packs. He pointed out that the ‘bling and bang’ culture popular with Jamaicans was accentuated criminal activity and to [...]
